MOVIE REVIEW
“Dune: Part II” is a masterpiece. A story of epic proportions, with strong characters, highlighted by high caliber actors, made in such a way that you don’t feel the three hours passing. A true performance today, when the attention span has shortened considerably, and the experience of going to the cinema is strongly contested by the comfort of the streaming channels. Well, “Dune” gives you an almost overwhelming experience, its large-scale scenes are put together with an impressive attention to detail, while the sound created by Hans Zimmer makes your seat vibrate. The directorial level of demand speaks for itself, Denis Villeneuve, a great fan of the Dune universe, was adamant about filming in the desert, devoting weeks to searching for the perfect location. To him, “Dune” is a world discovered in his childhood, in Frank Herbert’s SF books, so it’s understandable how he managed to translate into images a story considered too complex for the screen. After the first part, from 2021 (find it on HBO), which won six Oscars out of ten nominations, this sequel turns out to be more intense and dynamic, following the survival story of Paul Atreides – the boy who lost his father and arrived from the castle to the desert, taking refuge with his mother in a foreign and hostile world, which subjects him to merciless tests until he is accepted into the ranks of the Fremen (people of the desert). Timothée Chalamet animates the hero-in-the-making, on a path of destiny that is revealed to him gradually, limiting his options as he rises, level by level, tapping into the paradox of ascension: you grow, but the choices come by themselves at some point, they’re not yours anymore and what happens to love when the mission is above?
Chani, the brave Fedaykin fighter played by Zendaya, is a character which the director develops more than the book, wanting to emphasize, throughout the film, the idea upon which Frank Herbert insisted on throughout the series: the danger represented by a savior Messiah, awaited by people who credit him without limits. Chani sees what’s coming and warns, shouting at deaf ears, about control to people who rest their strength on their belief in an ancient prophecy. The drama of the impossible contradiction is thus outlined, for that belief gives them something to hope for and hope is always good, especially when you are oppressed, systematically robbed and need to resist somehow.
The cast is fantastic, the actors really breathed life into the characters and the pleasure in their interaction is obvious: Stilgar (Javier Bardem) – charismatic, strong, humane and sensitive, you breathe with him; Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) – inspires trust and loyalty; Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) – is by far the most interesting character, a fragile-looking survivor who, on the inside, doesn’t even blink; Timothée Chalamet fabulous, Zendaya – oozing strength and integrity.
The negative characters are carefully polished: Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) disgusting, cruel and calculating, Beast Rabban (Dave Bautista) – physically imposing, but weak at his core, coward even, Feyd-Rautha – a surprising antagonist, a psychopath with honorable, unexpectedly human accents, imprinted by Austin Butler, the revelation of the film.
All in all, a rich story, magnificently done, from which I took a lot: the scramble for resources, the precious spice, the greed, the palace intrigues, the political calculations, the shadow masters (Bene Gesserit), the lessons of influence and manipulation, the use of the power of the desert, the sandworm as a revered figure, the mix of magic and technology, the rituals of the Fremen, and how beautiful Chani saw Arrakis at sunset, a barren planet so stingy with resources that even tears had to be spared and so rich in danger that the mere crossing of a dune was an exercise in fatality, and how this beauty, reflected in her eyes, was transferred to Paul, who came from a green planet where it rained in buckets.
The finale indicates that the action continues, while Denis Villeneuve’s statements gave fans hope for a third part, “Dune: Messiah”, which we eagerly await, whether we grew up with “Dune” or discovered it recently, with the same amazement full of delight.

“Dune: Partea a II-a”
“Dune: Partea a II-a” e o capodoperă. O poveste de proporții epice, cu personaje puternice, puse în valoare de actori de calibru, realizată în așa fel că nu simți cum trec cele aproape trei ore. O reală performanță în ziua de azi, în care durata de atenție s-a scurtat considerabil, iar experiența mersului la cinema e puternic concurată de confortul canalelor de streaming. Ei bine, “Dune” îți oferă o experiență aproape copleșitoare, scenele de mari dimensiuni fiind realizate cu o atenție la detaliu impresionantă, iar sunetul creat de Hans Zimmer face să-ți vibreze scaunul. Exigența regizorală își spune cuvântul, Denis Villeneuve, un mare pasionat al universului Dune, a ținut neapărat să se filmeze în deșert, dedicând săptămâni întregi căutării locației perfecte. Pentru el, “Dune” e o lume descoperită în copilărie, în cărțile SF ale lui Frank Herbert, așa că e de înțeles cum a reușit să transpună în imagini o poveste considerată prea complexă pentru ecran. După prima parte, din 2021 (o găsiți pe HBO), care a câștigat șase premii Oscar din zece nominalizări, această continuare se arată a fi mai intensă și mai dinamică, urmărind povestea de supraviețuire a lui Paul Atreides – băiatul care și-a pierdut tatăl și a ajuns din castel în deșert, refugiat cu mama lui într-o lume străină și ostilă, care-l supune la teste neîndurătoare până la a-l accepta în rândurile Fremenilor (oamenii deșertului). Timothée Chalamet îl animă pe eroul în devenire, aflat pe un drum al destinului care i se arată treptat, limitându-i opțiunile pe măsură ce crește, nivel după nivel, atingând paradoxul implicat de ascensiune: crești, dar alegerile vin, la un moment dat, de la sine, nu mai sunt ale tale și ce se întâmplă cu dragostea când misiunea este mai presus? Chani, curajoasa luptătoare Fedaykin interpretată de Zendaya, este un personaj pe care regizorul îl dezvoltă față de carte, dorind să pună în evidență, pe parcursul filmului, ideea asupra căreia Frank Herbert a insistat de-a lungul seriei: pericolul reprezentat de un Mesia salvator, așteptat de oameni care-l creditează fără limite. Chani întrevede ce urmează și avertizează, strigând la urechi surde, despre control, unor oameni care-și sprijină tăria în credința într-o profeție veche. Drama contradicției imposibil de combătut este astfel schițată, pentru că acea credință le dă ceva de sperat, iar speranța e întotdeauna bună, mai ales când ești asuprit, jefuit sistematic și ai nevoie să reziști cumva.
Distribuția e fantastică, actorii au suflat efectiv viață în personaje, iar plăcerea cu care au interacționat unii cu ceilalți este evidentă: Stilgar (Javier Bardem) – carismatic, puternic, uman și sensibil, respiri în rând cu el; Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) – inspiră încredere și loialitate; Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) – este de departe, cel mai interesant personaj, o supraviețuitoare cu aspect fragil, care pe dinăuntru nici nu clipește; Timothée Chalamet fabulos, Zendaya – emană forță și integritate. Personajele negative sunt atent șlefuite: Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) dezgustător, crud și calculat, Beast Rabban (Dave Bautista) – impunător fizic, dar slab în esență, laș chiar, Feyd-Rautha – un antagonist care surprinde, un psihopat cu accente onorabile, neașteptat de umane, imprimate de Austin Butler, revelația filmului.
Per total, o poveste bogată, realizată magnific, din care am reținut multe: bătaia pe resurse, prețioasa mirodenie, lăcomia, intrigile de palat, calculele politice, maeștrii din umbră (Bene Gesserit), lecțiile de influență și manipulare, folosirea puterii deșertului, viermele de nisip ca personaj venerat, amestecul de magie cu tehnologie, ritualurile Fremenilor și cât de frumoasă o vedea Chani pe Arrakis la asfințit, o planetă aridă, atât de zgârcită în resurse, că și lacrimile trebuiau economisite și atât de bogată în pericole, că simpla traversare a unei dune era un exercițiu de fatalitate și cum se transferă această frumusețe, reflectată în ochii ei, și lui Paul, care venea de pe o planetă verde, unde ploua cu găleata.
Finalul anunță continuarea acțiunii, iar declarațiile lui Denis Villeneuve au dat speranță fanilor pentru o a treia parte, „Dune: Messiah”, pe care o așteptăm cu nerăbdare, indiferent că am crescut cu “Dune” sau l-am descoperit recent, cu aceeași uimire plină de încântare.
